The strengths in the squad, as far as batting is concerned, remain to be the youngsters Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Asela Gunaratne. All of them performed wonderfully well for Sri Lanka in the last Test and they will be the key performers for them in the Tests against India. Besides, they have Upul Tharanga and Danushka Gunathilaka to provide them some batting strength.

Angelo Mathews, Dilruwan Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva will take the role of all-rounders and will help them bat deep in the innings.

As for their bowling, they will mainly be relying on their new captain, Rangana Herath, to provide them some balance and penetration with the ball. Nuwan Pradeep has also been called back into the squad for the 1st Test and is expected to play a crucial role for them. Both Kulasekara and Malinga have been left out and Suranga Lakmal will be expected to share the new ball with Pradeep this time. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara has also been called in for the first time in Sri Lanka’s Test Squad.
