India have already landed in Sri Lanka for their next assignment where the visitors will be taking on Islanders in a full-fledge tour featuring 9 games in total across all three formats of the game. But, as the tour will be starting with a 3 match Test series, they have announced their Test side first that will be taking part in the longer format matches starting from 26th of July at Galle.
India will be playing under their regular captain Virat Kohli and that’s where they get most of their strength from. The captain leads from the front no matter what format they are playing in and is solid as a rock in the middle order. And though India haven’t played much of test cricket of late, he will be the real guiding light for the Indian side with the bat. In addition, with a new coach around, the atmosphere in the dressing room will be even better.
As said earlier, Virat is the main stay of Indian batting. However, besides him, there are quite a few players who can be in the spotlight for India as they proceed in the Test series. On top of the list is Ajinkya Rahane, who played wonderfully throughout the ODI series against West Indies and was, probably, the single most consistent batsman in the side. Going in with the tag of Vice Captain, Rahane scored 3 fifties and a hundred on the last tour against West Indies. So, a lot will be expected from him.
Besides, India are giving a chance to Shikhar Dhawan in Tests in the absence of Murali Vijay. KL Rahul will also be making his comeback to the Test side. Pujara and Saha are also part of the Indian batting line. So, they really have a strong batting lineup and will be expected to bat deep even in the longer format.
In Sri Lanka, both the spinners and the seamers will get support from the wicket and India have a well-balanced bowling attack for that. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be in the spotlight as far as seam bowling goes. Besides him, India have Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav to complete their pace attack.
In the spin bowling department, they will be expecting Ravi Jadeja and R Ashwin to do the job for them. However, the new sensation, Kuldeep Yadav is also part of the squad and he bowled brilliantly in the Caribbean series as well. He was unplayable for the West Indians and will be expected to take the leading role here as well. Let’s see how it turns out when boys take the field.
