So, just one game to go before we have the big final of what is perceived to be 18-days of exciting cricket, the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Yes, it’s the 2nd Semi Final of the tournament that we have ahead of us now and it really is going to be another exciting game of cricket. It will be the two sub-continent teams where India will be taking on Bangladesh. India have been splendid throughout but it’s a great opportunity for Bangladesh to show their strength at this level. They have already done enough for making it this deep in the tournament and if they have one good day then, who knows, they may even make it to the Final of the tournament.
Waiting for our prediction for the second semi final? Well, we’ll go with India for sure as they have been the second best side in the tournament after England. But again, we’ll have to give some respect to Bangladesh as well for making it to this stage and they might come with a surprise on the day. So, we’d say it will be 70-30 in favor of India.
Indian batsmen have shown great faith in their skills throughout the tournament and have piled up 300+ totals twice while batting first and then chased down 192 comfortably against South Africa in 38 overs. The key for them in the next game will again be their openers. Though Rohit couldn’t do well against South Africa but played brilliantly in the first couple of games scoring 169 runs in just two matches. But the star for them has been Shikhar Dhawan who seems so comfortable at the crease that you can’t imagine. He got 68 against Pakistan, 125 against Sri Lanka and then 78 against South Africa. So, that really shows the kind of form he is in. Kohli also is as dependable as ever and except the game against Sri Lanka he really has been spectacular with the bat. Other batsmen who look in supreme touch for India are Yuvraj Singh and Hardik Pandya. So, India have nothing to worry about as far as their batting is concerned.
So, with Indian batting well covered, let’s now talk about their bowling. Indian bowlers have really done a spectacular job in two of the matches in group stage. They managed to restrict Pakistan to just 164 and they reduced South Africa to only 191. But they did concede 322 against Sri Lanka and let them chase down the target successfully after scoring 321 in the first innings. So, they’d want tomorrow is not that odd day when their bowlers are taken to the attack. All their bowlers picked wickets in the last game but the main bowlers for them in the next game will be Bumrah and Kumar. And, even though India have Shami and Umesh Yadav sitting on the bench, it will be quite unlikely for them to change their winning combination from the last game.
Bangladesh batted brilliantly against England in their opening game to post a total in excess of 300 but then their bowlers failed to defend it. They were about to lose it against Australia but then rain came down and they managed to get 1 point. Finally, they played some splendid cricket against New Zealand to pull off an unlikely win and gave themselves a chance to make it to the semis. But now if they have to win it against India then they will have to go with their best XI for sure. Tamim Iqbal has been doing great job at the top for them in the tournament having scored 128 against England and 95 against Australia. Though he didn’t get off against New Zealand but still he will be their best chance against India to pile a fighting total. Their middle order didn’t perform in the first two games but then they had a super performance in a crucial from Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan after having been reduced to 3 for 12. Both the veterans scored hundreds and managed to give their side a chance to qualify for the semis with Shakib scoring 114 and Mahmudullah getting 102. Both of them can play a key role for them against India in the big semifinal on Thursday.
The area of concern for them, however, is their bowling. But they will really take heart from the performance they gave against New Zealand by restricting them to 265 for 8 from 152 for 3 at one stage. Mosaddek played a key role in that by picking up 3 for 13 in his 3 overs. But will that work against India as Indians are great players of spin. Well, we’ll have to wait and watch but Bangladesh really need to make their bowling choices very carefully. The good thing for them is that their pacers are getting wickets as well and if they manage to be a bit economical against India then we’ll really have a game on!
